Me: Sorry for the delayed reply. Got busy with work.

His voice kicks up at the end in what I assume is a question, so I give a sharp nod and he continues.

Me: Interview went well. They gave me some things to try on. Evan was there and he was nice.

“Sent! Now for the juicy stuff. Evan… with a heart.” He bounces his eyebrows and tosses me another grin. Grimacing, I flick on my blinker and pull into the turning lane. “Boyfriend?” Out of the corner of my eye, Huxley stares at the screen, thumbs ready.

“Uh no. Not yet at least…”

“Ah, okay. Hopeful boyfriend then. Got it. Last text you sent him said: I’m still thinking about the whole modeling thing. Not quite decided yet. His reply was: What’s to decide? You’ll look hot up on that billboard in one of our suits.” Huxley goes silent for a moment before letting out a groan and twisting in his seat to face me. “Lainie… come on. He can’t wait to see you in a swimsuit? This guy” — he taps the screen with a passion — “is a dick. Ditch him for Carrick.”

Cheeks burning, hands white-knuckling the steering wheel, my foot turns leaden and presses the accelerator too hard when the light changes. We jerk forward and the tires squeal as I take the turn faster than intended.

“Whoa there, speedy. Point taken. I shall try to keep my opinions to myself from here forward.” I dart a quick, unamused side-glance in his direction. “How do you want me to reply this time?” he asks, coolly stamping my intensity down.

Of course, my mind goes completely blank. Being Flirty Lainie was easier when there wasn’t someone acting as scribe. The brief frustration from a moment ago quickly morphs into embarrassment as Huxley gives me that innocent, wide-eyed expression as he awaits my response.

When the pressure becomes too much and I take too long, Huxley speaks up on my behalf. “How about this?:”
